Oct 30: the Mighty Mississippi

I enjoyed my 3 days on the Mississippi, but it was my least favorite from a navigational point of view:

  1. The 3 days we spent on the Mississippi where wicked windy, like 15-20 mph, and we were going into it at 10 mph, so all day the wind was rippin’. As tough as I am, that’s the kind of thing that gets on my nerves.
  2. Because it was so windy, we could not put the front window up. And we were motoring into the sun on hot days. I started to melt twice. Our flybridge almost caught fire.
  3. Because there is a 3 mph current, and the bottom is not flat, there are eddy currents and swirls in the river all the way down. These make the boat constantly move back and forth, left and right all day. Not a huge deal, but when you pass lots of barges, and the river is narrower than normal because they are in a serious drought, it’s just one more thing that grates on your nerves…

  1. Those high water markers… Sometimes I think they just goof on loopers and other visitors, see what they will accept as fact. I don’t think the water is that low currently either. I know you can see it with your own eyes but nowadays that can be dismissed as disinformation.

    • Excellent catch John. The pictures of the low water levels were in fact a deep fake that I have been working on with some North Korean hackers. Did not think anyone would call me on it. I’ll do a better job in future attempts.
